Lewisville probate attorney Stephen Stephens has announced his intention to run for Denton County Probate Judge this May.
Stephens is looking to replace Judge Don Windle, who is stepping down after five terms.
“I strongly believe probate is not a party matter and the Judge must be somebody that really knows probate law. It’s too important a job to be handed out on the basis of loyalty to the locally dominant political party,” said Stephens, who is running as a Democrat.
Stephens faces an uphill battle, as there are no Democrats holding elected positions in Denton County.
If elected, Stephens said that he will work towards reducing attorney’s fees in probate matters so that the heirs in estates receive more of the money they are entitled to.
In addition to his career as a probate attorney for over 30 years, Stephens has 10 years of judicial experience as a former Lewisville and Flower Mound Municipal Court Judge. He was the City Attorney for Hickory Creek and currently serves as Commissioner in Denton County Condemnation hearings.
He and his wife of 35 years, Nancy, have three daughters, Rebecca, Sarah, and Cara.
